We open our new season with a comedy about social climbing, set in the 1980s, when everyone wanted to escape their working class roots … Everyone, that is, except Dennis Cain, whose life is defined by garden gnomes, John Denver records, Tupperware and poshed-up cottage pie. And he thinks he’s the only one who wants to get out! Set on ‘Phase Two’ of a northern housing estate, this hilarious, quick-witted comedy is an early work by Willy Russell, who went on to write Educating Rita and Blood Brothers.
